An LSRP position is available in the combined Lab of Dr. Brooke Howitt, Dr. Gregory Bean, Dr. Gregory Charville, and Dr. Alarice Lowe in the Department of Pathology at Stanford University.
This opportunity allows for exposure to and involvement in a number of different research projects. Our lab studies various cancers including gynecologic, breast, gastrointestinal, and soft tissue sarcomas. We seek to understand the molecular underpinnings of human cancers, with the goal of developing new diagnostic, prognostic, and/or predictive biomarkers that can be applied in anatomic pathology clinical practice. Specifically, Dr. Bean's research interests include the genomes and transcriptomes of special subtypes of breast tumors, including neuroendocrine carcinomas, salivary-like carcinomas, papillary carcinomas and sarcomas, as well as precursor lesions in breast carcinogenesis. Dr. Charville's research projects involve studying genetic and epigenetic features of various soft tissue sarcomas including rhabdomyosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma. Dr. Howitt studies genetic, epigenetic, and transcriptomic characteristics of fallopian tube lesions, ovarian cancer, gynecologic sarcomas, endometrial carcinomas, and vulvar lesions. Dr. Alarice Lowe applies circulating tumor cell and molecular technology to identify and characterize rare tumor cells found in blood and cytology specimens. The LSRP will be involved in multiple defined research projects and will be responsible for independently conducting experiments and analyzing data with guidance from the PI's. Specifically, they will be doing molecular profiling (DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, and methylome profiling) and biomarker analysis on a variety of human cancers. The position also includes lab management tasks such as ordering supplies, maintaining our slide/block/tissue inventory, keeping detailed lab records, and adhering to safety regulations.

Plan and perform experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory. Interpret and perform basic analyses of results.
DNA and RNA extraction from fresh, frozen, and/or formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue, with subsequent library preparation and massively parallel sequencing (performed at a core facility). Sequencing data generated can be analyzed using existing software programs. Downstream experiments may include designing a targeted sequencing test, in situ hybridization, and/or immunohistochemical biomarker testing.
Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research.
Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with graduate post-doctoral individuals.
Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stocks, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
Help orient and train new staff or students.
A bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field.
Previous experience (preferred) or established knowledge of basic laboratory techniques in molecular biology.
Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
Must be accurate, efficient, organized and have excellent record keeping abilities.
Ability to work with team members in a cooperative fashion.
Excellent communication skills.
