The Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine (BBI) is looking for a candidate to fill a unique scientist position at the intersection of genomic technology development and medicine. The BBI is a joint venture between the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital, made possible by a $50 million gift from the Brotman and Baty Families. The BBI offers a dynamic work environment with cutting-edge science and computational resources.
We are looking for a scientist with a strong strategic vision, expertise in single cell molecular profiling technologies and the ability to translate requirements into results. This new position will develop a vision and drive the design, development and execution of our new Single Cell Genomics Platform within the Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine. This position will build a new Platform which will empower single-cell transcriptomic studies across hospitals, disease centers, laboratories, and clinical divisions.
The mission of this platform will be to provide an end-to-end service for single-cell genomics. To achieve this, the Single-Cell Genomics Platform will consult with investigators to design and power experiments; help in study performance to ensure success the first time; and assist with optimal data analysis. This platform will leverage existing infrastructure at the Brotman Baty Institute, as well as the University of Washington Department of Medicine and Department of Genome Sciences, and will support the single cell sequencing needs of investigators across our 3 partner institutions.
The BBI has a large budget and broad institutional support which will help us achieve maximum success. Building this platform and enabling the community to perform single cell sequencing will have an immediate and powerful impact on the practice of precision medicine. This is especially so because of the placement of the BBI at the intersection between research labs and the clinic. Your contributions will be recognized not only in Seattle by the BBI community but nationally and internationally, as you will have ample opportunities to lead publications as well as to attend/present at conferences. We anticipate this role has growth potential analogous to that of Institute Scientists at the Broad Institute (Broad Institute), many of whom are well recognized leaders in their field.
RESPONSIBILITIES Under the direction of Drs. Jay Shendure and Lea Starita, the Director of Single Cell Genomics will manage all aspects of building this platform. The scientist should have broad and deep experience in single cell technologies and analysis methods, molecular biology and genomics, and experience with large-scale efforts would be a plus.
The Single Cell Genomics Platform Director will oversee dedicated technicians, bioinformaticians, and administrative staff to support the analysis of single-cell transcriptomic data and will introduce investigators to computational pipelines to analyze data on their own.
The candidate will also work with the other more clinically focused platforms at the Brotman Baty Institute and the candidate will have the ability to shape the goals and strategy of the platform. A portion of your time will also be reserved for the development of new, related technologies.
Develop, optimize, and implement novel single cell molecular profiling technologies
Authorize and resource the development, implementation, and communication of the Platform
Oversee design, performance, business development, finances, and coordination of the Platform; be responsible for the outcome of services
In conjunction with the BBI Leadership team, set and execute goals for the Single Cell Genomics Platform, including leading proposal and contract development
Effectively communicate and execute a long-term strategic vision for the Platform, including scientific vision, organizational roles and capabilities, partnerships, and culture. Oversee the Platform to achieve scientific excellence, effective team management, and financial responsibility
Develop a plan for the Platform to stay abreast of the latest technologies and to foster a collaborative environment for developing new technologies
Successfully create and build productive relationships with faculty and potential future clients internally and externally
Scientific Project Management & staff oversight:
Develop and mentor technicians and staff working on single cell projects, experiments, and data analysis to meet expected operations goals.
Build a culture of collaboration, excellence and communication
Develop and oversee a production schedule
Manage ongoing collaborations and experiments using project management tools such as Trello
Oversee the development of a more robust and extensible data analysis pipelines
Consult with collaborating labs in the BBI community on best-practices
Communicate results and progress reports directly to Lea Starita and Jay Shendure
Communicate results more broadly at scientific conferences and symposia as an invited speaker, and by organizing single cell related meetings and symposia
Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics or related discipline
6 years of experience in functional genomics or high-throughput methods
Demonstrated expertise in single cell technologies
Candidate should have an outstanding academic and professional track record
Excellent managerial experience, including a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion
Candidate should be an innovative and analytical thinker with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. Must be highly disciplined and organized.
Successful candidates will be highly self-motivated and enthusiastic about taking a hands-on approach to collaborative scientific discovery efforts
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Candidate would ideally have experience with single-cell computational methods and/or bioinformatics
