The Johns Hopkins University invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Center for Biotechnology Education within the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences' Advanced Academic Programs Division. The Center Director is responsible for a range of professional educational programs including graduate degrees and certificates. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Graduate and Professional Programs, the Director will sustain the excellence of the Center programs, will foster and lead ongoing innovation in programs and curriculum, and will pursue efficiency and excellence in support services so as to ensure that the Center continues to fulfill its important role in the Krieger School.
Advanced Academic Programs
The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU). As the nation's oldest and one of the most prestigious research universities, Johns Hopkins offers high-quality master's degrees and post-baccalaureate education to students in the Mid-Atlantic region and online. In addition to the online programs, AAP also offers master's degrees and graduate certificate programs at its Washington, DC Center and at the Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD. AAP enrolls almost 5,000 students each academic year. AAP was started in 1992 as a way to provide students with the opportunity to obtain a master's degree in a professional and part-time graduate program at the Johns Hopkins University. At the time, AAP consisted of two degree programs: the Master of Science in Biotechnology and the Master of Arts in Writing. AAP currently offers 46 master's degrees (MA, MS, MA/MBA, MS/MBA, MBEE) and 12 certificates within 11 distinct programs. AAP's students take courses online and at campus locations in Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. The work of AAP's roughly 45 full-time faculty is supplemented by 450-650 adjunct instructors on average per year. AAP distinguishes itself through its small class sizes (typically 15 students per class), intensive instructional assistance, selective admissions, and dedicated full-time faculty. Tenured Krieger School faculty members serve as Program Chairs within AAP and work together in the Council of Program Chairs, an academic governance body.
Over the course of nearly 30 years, AAP has worked diligently to add new degree programs that fit within the academic structure of the School of Arts and Sciences and satisfy the demands of the marketplace - degrees such as the MA in Government, the MS in Applied Economics, and the MS in Environmental Sciences and Policy, among others. This approach to growing AAP has quickly become its hallmark, allowing it to be nimble and forward-thinking while staying true to its core academic mission. This track record of quickly identifying the best opportunities to launch programs that capture the interest of students while ensuring that the programs fully merit the Hopkins imprimatur has meant that AAP has become one of the top continuing- and professional-education programs in the country.
Maintaining standards worthy of Hopkins, AAP's goals are to offer academic excellence to non-traditional students, create new and innovative degree programs, fellowships, and certificates, and foster academic and social exchanges that give students the structure and opportunities they need to advance in a personal and professional capacity. AAP also recognizes that students' educational journeys can take many forms. For those who desire life-long learning, AAP offers two non-credit options: Odyssey and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at JHU.
Since 1993, the Master of Science in Biotechnology degree has strongly contributed to the portfolio of professional programs offered by the Advanced Academic Programs (AAP). Through years of serving the graduate education needs of professionals and industry human capital demand, AAP saw value in establishing the Center for Biotechnology Education (CBE) in 2009 to serve as a focal point for new and innovative programming in the sciences. Like the rest of AAP, the story of the Biotechnology programs is also one of growth.
Since its founding, the Center for Biotechnology Education has launched the Master of Biotechnology Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, the Post-Master's Certificate in Sequence Analysis and Genomics, the Master of Science in Food Safety Regulation, the Master of Science in Individualized Genomics and Health, the Master of Science in Bioinformatics, and the Master of Science in Biotechnology/MBA (a joint degree with the Carey Business School). In the fall of 2021, the CBE expects to launch a full degree program in Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies to address growing industry needs.
The CBE has been an important incubator for new degrees and certificates, for developing external partnerships with government and industry, and for executive education programming.
In both academic and administrative leadership roles, the Center Director oversees the curriculum, students, faculty, and staff for all of the program offerings. There are currently 1,322 active students, ten full-time faculty, two part-time faculty, and over 130 active adjuncts. The Center Director is also responsible for the development and oversight of new initiatives.
The Center Director is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month renewable faculty position with the academic title of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (appointment level commensurate with experience). The Center Director also serves as the Program Director for one or more programs within the Center. The Center Director reports jointly to the Program Chair for Biotechnology and the Associate Dean for Graduate & Professional Education, who leads the Advanced Academic Programs and reports to the Dean of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences.
The Center Director will have the following faculty and administrative responsibilities:
Teaching 3 graduate courses per year, including preparation and time spent in the classroom (online or onsite), using best practices for online teaching, engaging and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds in the learning process, and responding to student questions
Advising students in the Center for Biotechnology Education, including thesis and/or capstone or Independent Research Project advising
Providing innovative leadership for curriculum design and new course development to ensure the growth and delivery of quality programs
Other academic duties normally performed by full-time or regular part-time faculty, such as participating on committees, attending academic events, or contributing to other academic service.
Providing overall supervision for the eight programs and three certificates within the Center for Biotechnology Education
Serving as Program Director for one or more programs within the Center
Overseeing full-time and adjunct faculty hiring, development, and evaluation; making personnel decisions in consultation with the Program Chair and KSAS Dean or designee
Overseeing budget for the Center for Biotechnology Education
Overseeing program admissions processes, including reviewing and approving prospective students' admissions materials
Coordinating program promotion and outreach, including interacting with outside groups and developing external / internal partnerships
Coordinating with staff in student and faculty services, online education, marketing, finance, and enrollment services departments on operational issues related to program administration
The Center Director role is critical to maintaining the overall high quality of the Center's offerings and ensuring that key AAP programs continue to exceed enrollment goals. The Director must be entrepreneurial, energetic, collaborative, and inclusive. They will bring passion for education and its power to change lives, especially for part-time and non-residential students, combined with the business acumen necessary to lead a successful professional-education enterprise. A track record of building successful in-person and online education programs, as well as skills in instructional design, content development, and instructional technology, are important, as is experience with delivering an excellent student experience and a world-class user experience and making sound investments in new program offerings.
Viable candidates will demonstrate strategic understanding of the synergies that will strengthen AAP within the context of the entire University along with an appreciation for the possibilities of leveraging relationships with other schools and faculty members and designing and leading cross-cutting new initiatives. Candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds are of particular interest.

Terminal degree in the biological sciences
Five-plus years of higher education teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level
Three or more years of experience at the Program Director level or equivalent administrative experience
The ability to teach a variety of courses in the biotechnology and biological science fields
Demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching and innovation in curriculum design
Strong organizational skills
The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and multiple deadlines
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Five or more years of higher education teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level
Three to five years of related professional work experience outside of academia within the biological sciences, including but not limited to consulting or collaborative work or research with organizations like FDA, NCI, NIH, HHS, Biotechnology Companies, Pharmaceutical Companies, or Professional Associations
Experience managing a degree or certificate program
Experience managing laboratory environments
