This opportunity is in the laboratory of Dr. Christina Stallings in the Department of Molecular Microbiology. This position is for the Medical School Campus.
The Stallings Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated individual to assist with innovative research in the areas of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and biochemistry. In the Stallings Laboratory, we dissect the molecular details of Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogenesis, from the perspective of both the host and the pathogen. We use a combination of genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, and animal models of disease to seek better understanding of how M. tuberculosis defends itself against host immune attacks and antibiotic therapy as well as what immune responses are required to control M. tuberculosis infection. We have identified a number of mycobacterial proteins that function as mediators of mycobacterial stress responses and are required for pathogenesis. In particular, we are currently focusing on how regulation of gene expression, DNA replication, and respiration allow M. tuberculosis to adapt to host-derived stresses and antibiotic therapy. In addition, we have discovered multiple host proteins and immune pathways that are required to control M. tuberculosis infection and prevent active tuberculosis disease. In particular, our studies highlight the importance of the innate immune response in regulating neutrophil-predominated inflammation to prevent tissue damage. In addition to these mechanistic studies, the lab is working to apply our basic science findings to the treatment of disease in humans.
At least a bachelor’s degree.
Extensive prior experience in cell, molecular biology or related fields.
Hands-on work with mice (handling and monitoring mice, and performing small animal procedures).
Experience with mammalian cell culture.
Basic microbiology skills.
Experience with flow cytometry and immunological techniques.
Proficiency in basic molecular biology techniques, including DNA, RNA, Protein isolation and purification; PCR, reverse transcription PCR, Immunoblot, ELISA.
Working knowledge of Excel, Photoshop, and Image J is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
Ability to maintain complete and organized records.
Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.
Base pay commensurate with experience.

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals. In addition, Mycobacterium tuberculosis is handled in the Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory.
