Position Summary: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate III for the Department of Radiation Cancer Biology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The primary purpose of the Research Associate III position is to, under direction of the PI, perform technical research activities within a laboratory; assists in the conduct of highly specialized and technical research. Incumbent will work in the area of molecular cancer biology. The current focus of the Feng lab is the function of p53 in cellular metabolism, the functional study of several novel p53 target genes, and their contribution to tumor suppression. Through above functional and mechanistic studies, the lab aims to further understand the functions of p53 and identify new molecules in the p53 pathway for potential therapeutic intervention. The candidate will have the opportunity to join a highly translational laboratory. May supervise interns, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Among the key duties of this position are the following: - Performs various research and clinical technical operations relative to ongoing investigatory activities of a laboratory; may conduct independently, or as assigned specialized research for a particular project. Incumbent will assist and conduct independent research on the function of the p53 pathway in tumorigenesis and the regulation of the p53 pathway under the direction of the principal investigator.
- Assists in the development of performance standards, selection of methodology and instrumentation and coordination of the analytical, biochemical, physiology and instrumentation functions with the clinical and research areas to ensure conformance with the goals and objectives of the department.
- Under supervision, assists in the conducting of continuous program of research and development regarding the
analytical and instrumentation functions of the laboratory, participates in the evaluation of the existing procedures, suggesting revision, where necessary and proposing new procedures, where required. - May assist in organizing, leading and conducting highly specialized research activity for a particular research project.
- Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, technicians, and laboratory assistants, as required.
Minimum Education and Experience: - Master’s Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Effective oral and written communication skills.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe products.
Preferred Qualifications: - A PhD in Biological Science or related field; prior background in the fields of cancer metabolism and/or protein homeostasis; documented training and certification to conduct small animal research; demonstrated ability to secure independent grant funding and background in cancer biology research, as evidenced by a strong publication record in the field.
- Experience in writing grants, fellowships, manuscripts and scientific reports.
- Competent in standard laboratory techniques, mouse models of cancer, and knowledge in genomics and/or bioinformatics, including R or MATLAB.
