The main research focuses of the Nakai lab are: (1) AAV vector biology - capsid assembly, genome packaging, and virus-host interactions; (2) AAV antigen-antibody interactions; (3) developing novel AAV vectors by using cutting-edge technologies; (4) application of data science and machine learning approaches to gene therapy research; and (5) preclinical studies of gene therapy using rodents and non-human primates. The Nakai lab's ongoing projects supported by extramural grants and contracts target the central nervous system, liver, muscle, eye, pancreas and kidney, and the lab is a part of the NIDDK-supported Human Islet Research Network (HIRN). The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary collaborative team and participate in global collaboration, with an ultimate goal to develop AAV gene therapy for various human diseases. The successful candidate will also contribute to the training of graduate, undergraduate, and high school students, as well as research staff.
The Department of Molecular & Medical Genetics at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic post-doctoral fellow to study adeno-associated virus (AAV) and its application for human gene therapy in the lab led by Professor Hiroyuki Nakai, M.D., Ph.D. Specifically, the lab is looking for a post-doctoral researcher who can lead productively projects that aimed at developing novel AAV capsids using TRADE (TRanscirption-dependent Directed Evolution), a novel non-coding mRNA-based AAV capsid engineering method established in the Nakai lab, and studying their applications using various animal models. In addition, the successful candidate will participate in studies that intensively investigate the biology of AAV to understand the fundamental principles behind the virus-host interactions relevant to the development of novel molecular therapies for various diseases. There are various opportunities for post-doctoral fellows to lead currently ongoing projects and new projects.
