The Winifred Asbjornson Plant Sciences Chair will develop a competitive research program that will use modern techniques in plant molecular biology and genomics to address problems that pose the greatest economic threats in cereal production agriculture in Montana. The Chair will have an advisory council made up of representatives from Montana’s crop production industry and will actively collaborate with agronomists, breeders, entomologists, and plant pathologists to address the challenges of greatest economic significance. Current examples of issues of economic importance include herbicide resistance in economically important weeds, resistance to wheat stem sawfly and heat stress in cereals. Future examples may include control of orange wheat blossom midge and other cereal pests, the role of micronutrients in cereal health, nitrogen management in low pH soils, and improvements in winter-hardiness of fall-seeded rotational crops. The Chair will contribute to undergraduate and graduate courses and advising in plant molecular genetics or metabolomics, genetics/breeding and/or other areas of interest. He/she will provide appropriate public, departmental and university service.
PhD in Plant Science or related field.
Record of publishing in refereed journals.
Research in molecular genetics and/or metabolomic analyses relevant to crop improvement.
Experience in teaching.
Experience working with cereal crops.
Successful collaboration in research.
Post-doctoral experience and demonstrated productivity in basic and applied biological research using plants.
Demonstrated application of research methods and technology to promote sustainable crop production.

The Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences (LRES) is in the College of Agriculture at Montana State University. Our work spans land resources and environmental science and management, and includes cutting-edge, innovative teaching, fundamental and applied research, and highly effective outreach and service to a broad range of public and private entities. Our faculty offer broad expertise related to soils, microorganisms, insects, plants, climate and water to achieve an integrated multi-scale and multi-disciplinary approach to understanding and managing ecosystems. We address issues related to natural and managed landscapes such as crop-land, rangeland, forests, reclaimed land, polar and geothermal environments, and protected natural areas, with fundamental and applied investigations in agriculture, environmental science, land management, and natural resources. We advance scientific understanding across spatial and temporal scales, and apply this understanding for effective land management, informed adoption of sustainability practices, and broad education of students in preparation for careers in the agricultural and environmental sciences. LRES consists of 35 rese...arch and teaching faculty, about 200 undergraduate students, 25 thesis M.S., 60 online MS, and 25 Ph.D. graduate students, and 40 technical and postdoctoral scientists, and has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration within the department and across the institution and State. The Department is supported through the College of Agriculture, the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Extension Service, which work together to generate and disseminate superior knowledge and technological solutions to increase the competitiveness of Montana agricultural and natural resource enterprises
