The Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory seeks a laboratory coordinator in the field of soil microbiology and microbial metabolism. The coordinator will support and coordinate research on carbohydrate anabolism and catabolism in soil organisms and the environment. This lab technician will be responsible for developing libraries of soil microorganisms capable of consuming and synthesizing various carbohydrates. This will require helping build new microbial prospecting platforms. In addition, the laboratory coordinator will support efforts to identify the genes responsible for novel metabolism using a variety of ‘omics’ approaches. The position is ongoing, pending adequate performance and available funding.
Required:
Candidates must have at least a B.S./B.A. degree plus a minimum of 5 years related experience, or Master’s degree plus at least 2 years experience, or PhD
Degree(s) should be in Microbial Ecology, Soil Microbiology, or other closely related field
Broad understanding of microbial physiology and microbial interactions with the environment
Experience developing laboratory assays in soils and/or cultures
Experience understanding and managing microbiological and/or genomic datasets
Excellent communication skills
Preferred:
Extensive experience in developing microbial isolate or consortia libraries via a variety of microbial culturing and isolation approaches
Demonstrated experience in working with ‘omics’ databases, bioinformatics and coding (knowledge of Python and/or additional languages are an advantage), and/or statistical analysis (R and other statistical software) as related to microbiome analysis
Experience mentoring undergraduate students
Previous experience in working with the soil organic matter cycling and stabilization
Demonstrated ability to contribute to peer-reviewed publications
Work with stable isotope tracers
