This position is available through a strategic hiring plan coordinated by the Microbial Systems Initiative (https://msi.research.illinois.edu) that will expand interdisciplinary microbial research and education across campus. Microbial research at the University of Illinois has contributed foundational insights in microbial physiology, ecology and evolution that are now essential for microbiome research. We aim to build on our history and the diverse research in microbial systems taking place across campus to integrate fundamental studies of microbes with application to human, animal, plant, and environmental microbiomes. Through this interdisciplinary hiring strategy and other investments, we will illuminate microbial biology and host interactions across scales and in diverse contexts.

Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in Animal Science, Microbiology, Genomics/Computational Biology, Biochemical Sciences, Biological Sciences or similar fields, with a research emphasis on mechanistic approaches to understanding how animal microbiomes impact the physiology of production animals, especially the nutrition and/or health of the host, a commitment to teaching, and an ability to establish an externally funded, internationally-recognized program of research in Animal Microbiomes and Microbiology.
Responsibilities: The Department of Animal Sciences has a long and prominent history of discovery and excellence in Anaerobic Microbiology with special reference to the intestinal tract, with one of the seminal discoveries in microbe-microbe interactions, i.e., Interspecies Hydrogen Transfer, made by two of its eminent Microbiologists Marvin P. Bryant and Meyer Wolin. To continue with its renowned tradition in the field of Host-Microbe interactions, the Department seeks candidates for a position of Assistant Professor of Animal Microbiomes. The successful candidate will develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized research program supported by extramural funding. The successful candidate will also participate in and contribute to the campus-wide Illinois Microbial Systems Initiative (https://msi.research.illinois.edu) – a multidisciplinary effort aimed at expanding microbial research and education across campus, the microbiology discipline in the department, and also contribute to the public service missions of the University. Teaching responsibilities may include the development of a new course in the area of Microbiology, preferable on Animal Microbiomes, and contribution to teaching existing courses in Biochemistry at the department.
Candidates with research interests in applying biochemical, genetics, computational and Omics approaches to understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning how microbiomes impact nutrient acquisition or regulate immunity or behavior and well-being of production animals or animal models are encouraged to apply. Potential research topics may include, but are not limited to: the interaction of the gut microbiome with their hosts and diet; the role of animal microbiomes and community structure in health and disease; application of genetics and genomics to the gut microbiome and its impact on animal/human diseases; the relationship between microbiome structure and microbial activity/functionality; microbiome metabolism of dietary components and functional foods/feed additives; development of animal models to study the human microbiome; and development of microbiome technologies with application to improving the quality of animal foods for human consumption. Candidates with postdoctoral research experience, a strong record of publications and potential to build a world class research program, while contributing to teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels, will be preferred.
