Department: MED-Neurology Salary/Grade: NEX/15 Job Summary: The Carvill Lab in the Department of Neurology is seeking a new research technologist to join our team. Our research focuses on the genetic and epigenetic basis of epilepsy; we use numerous genomic technologies as well as iPSCs to study pathogenic mechanisms towards discovering new precision therapies. We are seeking a technician to work on multiple NIH and Foundation-funded research projects, as well as to oversee the general day to day running of the lab. Manages one or more phase(s) of a major project(s) or all activities of a small project. Ensures overall lab compliance with all associated rules & regulations. Specific Responsibilities: - Acting as a technical expert or specialist in a particular field within a research lab, establishes & optimizes protocols & coordinates conduct of multiple complex experiments.
- Reviews results & revises protocols as necessary to ensure that project objectives are attained.
- An expert level in many of the stated skills is required.
Molecular Biology: - DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression
- Analysis, Western blotting
- PCR, RT-PCR
- Plasmid preparation
- Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA
- Recombinant virus production and purification
Cellular Biology: - Cell culture, cell isolation
- Functional studies
- Transfection
Histology: Immunology: Animal: - Husbandry
- Database management of colony
Administration - Oversees & manages lab databases which may include ensuring that experiments are observed & that data is collected & entered correctly.
- Reviews & analyzes data.
- Creates computer models, graphs, reports & summaries for use in publications, professional journals, & grant applications.
- Co-authors scientific papers for presentation & publication.
- Researches & obtains funding.
- Creates & maintains lab manuals regarding operating, safety, etc. procedures.
Finance - Creates lab financial plan & budget/audit expenses.
- Obtains sales quotes for lab equipment & supplies.
- Reviews & adjusts expenses to decrease costs.
- Oversees repair & maintenance of all lab equipment.
- Ensures that lab supplies are ready & available when necessary.
Supervision - Trains, directs, assigns duties to & may supervise lab EEs, students, residents &/or fellows.
Miscellaneous - Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: - Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 5 years' lab/bench or other relevant experience required; OR
- Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 3 years' lab/bench or other relevant experience.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.) - Working knowledge of computers and software (Microsoft Word, Excel) basic statistics; ability to work independently, Strong organizational skills and multitasking
Preferred Qualifications: - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the life sciences
- Previous experience working in a research lab (minimum 5 years) is essential
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities) - Experience with iPSC maintenance and differentiation, preferably to a neuronal lineage.
- Genome editing with CRISPR/Cas9
- Expertise in next generation sequence technologies and basic understanding of analysis, for instance: targeted/exome/genome sequencing, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, scRNAseq or similar
- Track record of training junior scientists, primarily undergraduates and graduate students.
