Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist IV for the department of Medicine at the Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, this position conducts specialized clinical and translational research on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with a particular focus on the role of the gut microbiome in disease onset and management. Uses judgment to adapt methods and techniques. May assist in the management/coordination of a small laboratory.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
As assigned, performs various research and technical procedures. Performs routine analyses include DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, library prep, ELISA, (anaerobic) bacterial culture, and other assays. Responsible for maintaining competency in handling, processing, and shipping of specimens and management of protected health information. Manages long-term storage and archiving of bio samples and correlating metadata. Maintains thorough knowledge of research study, study rationale, and study subjects.
Keeps neat, thorough, and up-to-date records of procedures and experiments using paper and/or electronic platforms. Compiles data and presents results with appropriate conclusions and recommendations. Generates publication-quality figures and tables.
Responsible for timely and accurate entry of data into research databases. Regularly audits database for errors and obtains missing information.
Assists in the establishment of performance standards, as well as in the selection of methodology and instrumentation. Evaluates existing procedures and proposes modifications or changes in order to keep the methodology and procedures current. Comfortable learning new protocols and working with limited supervision and with the utmost research integrity.
Assists in conducting a continuous program of research and development. Recognizes problems, alerts the supervisor as needed, and communicates all changes. Tracks and manages short and long-term study plans according to goals of Principal Investigator.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's Degree in a relevant science, or a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus at least one (1) year of related research experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficiency with Internet applications and in using various Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Willingness to learn and perform bioinformatics analyses of high-throughput sequencing data.
Excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.
Ability to interface effectively with all levels of management.
Work and communicate effectively with both internal and external team members. Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to multitask and work well under pressure.
Ability to work and make decisions independently.
Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems.
Willingness to use personal transportation to collect or transport specimens in limited situations.
Knowledge of statistical software (e.g., SPSS, PRISM, R); familiarity with command line operating systems (e.g., UNIX); experience with REDCap database software.
Mouse work experience.
Statistics, ideally bioinformatics, experience.
