The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery faculty members are advancing research regarding disorders within this complex specialty. These scientists and clinician-investigators perform a broad range of research. The current research in the Hashino Lab is focused on establishing means to generate from pluripotent stem cells sensory neurons and hair cells in the inner ear, and elucidating the epigenetic mechanisms underlying directed cellular differentiation. The Hashino Lab established a novel 3D stem cell culture system to recapitulate embryonic inner ear development in vitro from human pluripotent stem cells. Using this human in vitro model system and genome editing technology, the team is also studying pathophysiology of various forms of congenital and progressive inner ear disorders. The ultimate goal is to identify therapeutic targets for these genetic inner ear disorders. The Hashino Lab seeks a Research Tech to join the team in support of this groundbreaking research. In the role of Research Tech I, you will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience working under the direction of our principal investigator and senior researchers.
Duties will include:
- Independently perform experiments and assays under instructions of the principal investigator and senior researchers including cell culture, staining and microscopy, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, PCR, and protein assays.
- Maintain laboratory organization/safety/equipment and supervise students.
- Other duties as assigned including but not limited to performance of additional duties while working independently during occasional weekends and evenings to maintain experiments and cell cultures.
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or neuroscience.
Ability to work independently and communicate with lab staff and investigators. Ability to maintain, complete, and organize reports/records. Knowledge and familiarity with molecular/cellular biology methods. Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.
One year of lab experience in stem cell culture and confocal microscopy.
Working Conditions / Demands
Must be able to put in a full work day (typically 8 hours) working at the laboratory bench, moving from room to room for different tasks, where equipment and supplies are housed. Able to stock and re-stock supplies. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends to maintain experiments and cell cultures. Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without an accommodation.
