Post-doctoral fellow in computational genetics
Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases at Imagine Institute, Inserm, Paris, France
The Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases (Director: Dr Laurent Abel) at the Imagine Institute (Institut des Maladies Génétiques), Inserm (Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale)/University Paris Descartes, Paris, France, is looking for a motivated and qualified post-doctoral fellow in computational genetics.
Our laboratory is working on the genetic dissection of predisposition to infectious diseases. The lab comprises two teams working on genetic epidemiology and genetic immunology. The union of the two teams is highly synergic, facilitating an integrated approach to studies of the human genetics of infectious diseases. Our laboratory is also benefiting from the establishment of a sister laboratory at the Rockefeller University in New York in the framework of an INSERM-associated international laboratory of human genetics of infectious diseases. The Paris branch is located within the Imagine Institute dedicated to the study of genetic disorders, and offering cutting edge research and core facilities.
The selected candidate will be involved in projects on the genetic basis of severe COVID-19. We recently discovered that nearly 14% of patients with life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia have impaired production or impaired action of type I interferons, due to inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) in the type I interferon (IFN) pathway (3.5%) or to blockade of type I IFN by pre-existing neutralizing autoantibodies (auto-Abs) (10.2%) (Zhang et al, Science 2020; Bastard et al, Science 2020). In this context, he/she will be working on the search for novel IEIs responsible for the development of severe COVID-19 and on the genetic basis of the production of Type I IFN auto-antibodies. These projects are based on the in-depth analysis of next-generation sequencing human data (whole exome and whole genome sequencing) to search for enrichment of genetic variants in patients as compared with controls. He/she will utilize existing tools and software packages while also tailoring and developing them to meet the specific project goals. In addition, this person will interact with a team of statistical geneticists and wet-bench investigators. The position requires a highly dynamic, interactive and communicative attitude. Qualifications/tasks: Ph.D. in statistical genetics or computational biology. Experience with the statistical analysis of next-generation sequencing human data. Proficiency with at least one programming language (R, Python and/or Perl are preferred) and with bash/shell scripting. Writing of scientific publications and reports Presentation of study results at international conferences High motivation with strong English communication skills.
Additional information about our laboratory is available at https://www.institutimagine.org/en/laurent-abel-74.
The position is available as soon as possible, and is offered for three years. Salary will depend on previous experience.
Interested candidates should submit their application (CV, cover letter and reference contacts) by email to: Laurent Abel: laurent.abel@inserm.fr and/or Aurélie Cobat: aurelie.cobat@inserm.fr The most interesting candidates will be invited for an interview.
