Laboratory Research Technician

Department GENOMICS AND BIOINFORMATICS (BL-CGBI-IUBLA) Department Information The primary missions of the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics (CGB) are to: act as a service facility that provides Indiana University faculty access to genome technologies and bioinformatic support; provide consulting and training that supports the development of genome-enabled research programs and grant proposals; and develop new genome technologies and bioinformatics tools that are not easily purchased as a fee for service elsewhere. Job Summary Perform routine and specialized laboratory procedures in a clinical molecular diagnostic testing laboratory focused on providing large-scale, high-throughput SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic testing/screening. Procedures include, but are not limited to: RNA extraction, RT qPCR, routine lab maintenance, and procedures (such as QC monitoring, participating in a quality management plan, performing proficiency testing, and computer entry). Procedures will be highly automated using robotic sample handling platforms with the goal of processing thousands of specimens per day. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a relevant scientific field and eighteen months of work experience in a laboratory environment. Knowledge of chemistry and biology with good general math skills. Basic computer skills. Basic knowledge of scientific instrumentation. Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide diversity of individuals. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with people. Proficient with molecular/PCR techniques. Ability to work with a high volume of samples daily. Preferred Qualifications Experience with robotics. Experience with biosafety level-2 procedures. Basic experience with clinical laboratory information systems. Working Conditions / Demands Position requires manual dexterity, reliable attendance, long hours on feet or sitting, repetitive motions, constant handling of scientific instruments and computers, detailed visual interpretations and accuracy. Work Location Bloomington, Indiana Work Hours Requires shift work that may include early morning or evening work hours. Alternating shifts is acceptable and can be coordinated with other laboratory personnel. The testing will be performed seven days a week. A five day work week is the expectation and some weekends will be required.
