The Initial Review Date (IRD) for this job is: 11-23-2020 Dept Marketing Statement Comprising diverse researchers from a variety of disciplines across academic divisions, the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute leads UC Santa Cruz's efforts to unlock the world's genomic data and accelerate breakthroughs in health and evolutionary biology. The Genomics Institute supports the scientific efforts of principal investigators, which involves approximately 110 personnel (which includes approximately 60 career staff, 10 academic non-faculty members, 30 graduate student researchers, and a handful post doctoral scholars and student employees), participating in projects supported by funds from the federal and state governments, private gifts, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Additionally, the GI provides funding support for approximate 80 additional personnel for GI related projects. Our platforms, technologies, and scientists unite global communities to create and deploy data-driven, life-saving treatments and innovative environmental and conservation efforts, while addressing the most fundamental societal and policy questions. The Computational Genomics Platform (CGP) team uses big data technologies to facilitate genomic research for global health issues such as breast cancer and other genetic risk factors. The team collaborates with many universities and institutes around the world. Examples of projects include supporting a global team to create the Human Cell Atlas, a compendium that maps gene activity in each cell in the human body, and the National Health Institute cloud initiatives BioData Catalyst and AnVIL, which are about developing the technology to share combine, and analyze controlled-access genomic data across different institutes. More information about the Genomics Institute can be found at: https://ucscgenomics.soe.ucsc.edu/ Job Overview Collaborates with external research laboratories to import bioinformatic workflows and/or data into databases and web pages maintained by UCSC and external grant partners for display, access and re-analysis. Works closely with biomedical lab personnel to prepare the data for ingestion into databases and/or the workflows into a common workflow language like WDL or CWL. Searches literature and existing databases for key and important workflows as candidates to archive into Dockstore. Prepares and presents outreach material on Dockstore and other software products. This job involves some travel to scientific conferences. Works with internal software developers and database testing staff to ensure data integrity and make the data and/or workflows accessible to the scientific community through web-based access to public and proprietary databases. Union Representation: None Job Duties 40% - User Support and Outreach Serves as UCSC contact for direct user support of software products, such as Dockstore. Develops training materials such as documentation, exercises, and tutorials covering workflow development and execution of workflows in partner cloud platforms. Presents outreach material in workshops, webinars, and presentations at scientific conferences. 30% - Data and Workflow Management Utilizes software tools to import moderately complex data and/or biomedical workflows from collaborators at external labs into UCSC databases and partner platforms; checks for consistency, accuracy and repeatability. Utilizes existing algorithms, techniques, and statistical methodologies to conduct data analysis. Works closely with lab personnel to upload data into databases and/or reformat bioinformatics pipelines into common workflow languages like CWL or WDL. Assists with implementation of changes to operational systems and databases. 20% - Quality Assurance/Quality Control Assesses the needs of new features based on user feedback. Advises developers on user features and layouts that emphasize ease of users to understand and find their workflows and data. Develops scripts that help analyze metadata to ensure its consistency and accuracy. 10% - Product Curation Creates and maintains web pages associated with datasets and workflows. Accurately captures and documents experimental methods at an appropriate technical level. Reads relevant scientific papers and incorporates information into descriptions and verification.
