Assistant Professor The Department of Life Sciences at Texas A&M University-San Antonio is seeking to hire a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology with expertise in Bioinformatics who will begin his/her appointment in Fall 2021. We seek a data scientist with a track record of developing and/or using computationally intensive techniques to analyzing high throughput genomic data. While the area of inquiry is open, preference will be given to candidates whose work can be successfully conducted at a primarily undergraduate institution with a new and developing master's program. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue external funding and actively publish in his/her area of expertise. In addition, the successful candidate will be well versed in the use of Linux computing environments and the use of one or more programming languages that are commonly used in data science, such as Python, R, or Java. The teaching load is a 3/3 for research active faculty, and the successful candidate will be a dedicated teacher who will offer undergraduate and graduate level courses in bioinformatics, data science for biologists, systems biology, or related areas. In addition, the candidate may be expected to contribute to the teaching of 1000 and/or 2000-level courses in Biology, such as Statistics in Biology & Medicine, Introductory Cellular and Molecular Biology (General Biology I), and Genetics. Summer teaching assignments may be available, but are not guaranteed. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in institutional service. Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) has approximately 6,700 students enrolled in undergraduate programs and select graduate programs. Previously an upper division-only institution, it transformed rapidly into a comprehensive 4-year urban university with the first cohort of freshmen and sophomores admitted in Fall 2016.
