| Specific Title: Vice Chair of Basic Science Research and Director of the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research Location: IU School of Medicine Department: IUSM - Pediatrics Campus: IU School of Medicine Indianapolis Position Announcement: Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), Department of Pediatrics, is seeking applications for the Vice Chair of Basic Science Research and Director of the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research. This is a key leadership position in a nationally renowned center for basic science and translational research and an opportunity to shape the role and focus of expansion of this division. This position will hold a large endowed chair to support personal research as well as generous startup and personal compensation. The successful candidate will possess an MD and/or PhD degree, an NIH funded research program, academic credentials appropriate for an appointment with tenure, and eligibility for medical licensure in Indiana if applicable. Candidates for this position should be eligible to be a Professor of Pediatrics with a secondary appointment in a basic science department at IUSM. The successful candidate must be capable of leading multi-investigator grants, have a proven track record and enthusiasm for training physician scientists at all levels and be committed to facilitating the development of the next generation of physician-scientists. Applicants should articulate a vision to thematically build the research base to promote collaborative and impactful research aimed at improving child health. Because we seek the best, most qualified scientist and leader, a successful MD candidate need not be a pediatrician, and opportunities for clinical engagement can be personalized. The Wells Center for Pediatric Research is part of a 750,000 sq. ft. interconnected state-of-the art research complex on the IUSM campus in Indianapolis, Indiana. Work in the Wells Center focuses on basic science research discovery and translational studies with a focus on pediatric disease, and seeks to rapidly move basic or bench research findings into the clinical setting. Current research is conducted by 40 investigators and over 200 technicians and staff members focused on 8 areas: Cardiac Developmental Biology; Hematologic Malignancies and Stem Cell Biology Research; Diabetes; Molecular Oncology and Experimental Therapeutics; Pulmonary Inflammation, Asthma, and Allergic Diseases; Cardiovascular Genetics; Infectious Diseases and Global Health; and Cell and Gene Therapy. The current extramurally-funded research portfolio of the Department of Pediatrics is approximately $75M annually, including more than $29M from the NIH. The Department has doubled its research portfolio since 2013. A major expansion of the Wells Center is currently underway with a commitment to recruit multiple additional investigators. There are multiple major initiatives that are School wide that are important opportunities for the growth of Child Health at IU School of Medicine. These include a 140 million dollar precision health initiative, a Strategic Research Initiative (SRI), a new joint IUSM and IU Health Hospital research collaboration that will enhance the institutions' joint capabilities in fundamental scientific investigation, translational research and clinical trials. In addition, The Riley Children's Foundation is beginning a 5 year strategic plan process for 2020-2025 that provides a major opportunity for research growth in child health.
