Researchers in the Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) seek to unravel and fully describe the complexities of biological systems--from how plants make oils and other products to the role of proteins in disease. Our work helps to develop and makes use of the tools and techniques of biochemistry, molecular genetics, and structural biology. We also leverage the unique capabilities of Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source-II and Center for Functional Nanomaterials, major research facilities open to scientists from around the world. Our research makes important contributions to fulfilling the missions of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences and Office of Biological and Environmental Research. In addition, together with the Collider-Accelerator Department, the Biology Department manages the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at Brookhaven, which is used by radiobiologists and physicists to study the effects of space radiation on both living and non-living systems with the aim of protecting future astronauts.
The Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks to fill a 3-year term Postdoctoral Research Associate opening. The qualified candidate is expected to pursue the biochemical and structure-function studies on the protein complexes of cytochrome P450 enzymes with their redox partners and/or ancillary proteins that are involved in phenylpropanoid-lignin biosynthesis. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Generating protein variant.
Developing and employing biochemical and genetic approaches to assess functional alteration of protein variants.
Exploring heterologous expression systems to produce, purify and reconstitute membrane-bound protein complexes.
Conducting cryo-EM sample screening and data collection.
Determining structures of protein complexes.
Summarizing, recording and reporting experimental data to the PI.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires a Ph.D. in (plant) biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, biophysics or related discipline.
Laboratory research experience in the field of plant biochemistry, molecular genetics, and/or protein structural biology.
Demonstrated experience and ability in the standard techniques of (plant) biochemistry, molecular genetics, and/or structural biology.
Experience in protein heterologous expression, purification, mutagenesis, and enzymatic assay.
A proven track record of experimental design, execution and data analysis as reflected in manuscript writing and successful publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Clear and concise communication and the ability be able to interact with scientists in different disciplinaries.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience in membrane protein preparation and handling is strongly preferred.
Knowledge or experience in Cryo-EM, Protein Footprinting, Small/Wide Angle X-ray Scattering, or Chemical Crosslinking-Mass Spectrometry is a plus.
Experience in the studies of protein-protein interaction, and protein/enzyme complex.
Experience in plant metabolite analysis using HPLC, LC-MS and/or GC-MS.
Knowledge on plant phenylpropanoid-lignin biosynthesis.
