![]() Postdoctoral Research Associate About Northeastern: Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus. Our locationsin Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahantare nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research. Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of on-campus and online formatslead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers. About the Opportunity: The Distel Laboratory at the Northeastern University Marine Science Center seeks a postdoctoral research scientist to take a leading role in interdisciplinary research exploring the microbiology, physiology and molecular biology of marine bacteria-invertebrate symbioses. The research will focus on shipworms (worm-like wood-eating marine bivalves) and their intracellular bacterial endosymbionts. Shipworms are economically and ecologically important consumers of wood in marine environments and the only marine animals known to grow and reproduce with wood as their sole food source. They are unique among all marine intracellular symbioses in that both the hosts and their symbionts can be cultured in the laboratory. The current position will develop shipworms as a model system for studying host-symbiont interaction under funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and will support a NOAA funded project that explores potential biomedical and biotechnological applications of symbiont communities associated with an ancient submerged forest off the coast of Alabama. The position is located at the Ocean Genome Legacy Center (OGL) at Northeastern University's Coastal Sustainability Institute. OGL is a non-profit marine research organization and biological specimen repository dedicated to exploring and preserving the wealth of information contained in the genomes of endangered, rare, unusual and ecologically critical marine organisms. The Coastal Sustainability Institute is part of the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences and is a research and education facility located on the peninsula at historic East Point in Nahant, Massachusetts. Nahant is a historic coastal community that is close to downtown Boston. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will utilize molecular techniques to (1) explore host-symbiont interactions in the shipworm symbiotic model system, (2) perform laboratory and field research, (3) lead and assist with the preparation of research papers and grant proposals, (4) assist with overall management of the Distel Laboratory and (5) help supervise and train students. Ability to SCUBA dive within the AAUS framework is also desirable. Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent in microbiology, bacterial molecular biology or a related biological discipline is required. Candidates must be able to undertake substantial full-time research and scholarship under the supervision of a senior scholar and must be knowledgeable in one or more of the following disciplines: molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, microbiology. Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in cloning, plasmid construction, bacterial transformation, library construction, protein expression, genomic and metagenomic sequencing, comparative genomic analysis, biochemical detection of carbohydrate-active enzyme activity, in situ hybridization and fluorescence microscopy will be especially valuable. Salary Grade: 10 Additional Information: Northeastern University is an equal opportunity employer, seeking to recruit and support a broadly diverse community of faculty and staff. Northeastern values and celebrates diversity in all its forms and strives to foster an inclusive culture built on respect that affirms inter-group relations and builds cohesion.
