![]() Junior Specialist/Assistant Specialist - Zhou Lab This position provides technical, scientific and organizational assistance to Dr. Huaijun Zhou's research and Department of Animal Science, which focuses on to work on FAANG (Functional Annotation of Animal Genomes:www.fang.org) related research activities in farm animal genomes. The research is designed to specifically focus on epigenomic technologies such as ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq. etc. The research contributes to both the generation of fundamental knowledge about genome annotation and an improved understanding of the gene regulation. Research (85%) The Junior Specialist /Assistant Specialist will be required to actively coordinate, conduct, and oversee scientific research projects. The focus of this position is to conduct epignomics assays on a diverse of tissues across different farm animal species. In addition to these duties, there will be an opportunity for the individual to help develop and conduct state-of-the-art molecular genetic techniques in the field of genomics and genetics. The ideal candidate must be a motivated, independently driven individual who will work and collaborate with members of the lab in animal genome related research. The position will expect a particular level of independence, creativity, and ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with fellow lab members. A majority of the lab research focuses on next generation sequencing technology and any experience on next-generation sequencing, epigenetics, bioinformatic data analysis is strongly encouraged. The Junior Specialist/Assistant Specialist will not be required to assist the PI in study design but will be required to learn to process and analyze data. Evaluate data and prepare tables and graphs for publication. Calculate statistics as needed using statistical tools. Draft reports and sections of publications and presentations. The Junior Specialist will be required to contribute to scholarly manuscripts by reviewing and commenting on draft manuscripts, literature searches, data collection and scoring, and helping to write methods or other sections. The Junior Specialist will review and conduct peer-reviewed literature searches relevant to scientific activities in the lab. Professional Competence and Activities (0%) The Junior Specialist/Assistant Specialist will not be required to participate any activities in this category. University and Public Service (15%) The Junior Specialist/Assistant Specialist will participate in training activities, such as schedule, train and mentor undergraduate student assistants. Instruct and train visiting scholars, graduate students, staff, and volunteers. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: For Jr. Specialist: Bachelor's degree in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related discipline For Asst. Specialist: Master's degree in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related discipline. Or 5 years experience in the related field. SALARY RANGE: Full-time position, commensurate with qualifications and experience. TERM OF APPOINTMENT: One year appointment with the possibility of extension based on funding and needs to the research project. Note: A Junior Specialist is an entry level position. In general, it is inappropriate to appoint an individual with a Master's or doctoral degree in the relevant position, or a Bachelor's degree with five or more years of experience as a Junior Specialist. It is inappropriate to appoint an individual with a doctorate in a discipline relevant or related to the research as an Assistant Specialist.
