PostDoctoral Associate in Protein Design/Engineering
Rutgers University
Position Summary: The Khare lab (http://sagardkharelab.org) in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and Institute for Quantitative Biomedicine (IQB) at Rutgers University is seeking applications for a postdoctoral associate position from skilled and highly motivated individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas: We are seeking an individual to contribute to the development of exciting new methodology for multiple collaborative projects funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, and aimed at designing enzymes, including using unnatural amino acids (UAA). The postdoctoral fellow will develop protein designs using novel computational methodology and work closely with collaborators with expertise in UAA incorporation for experimental characterization of designed proteins. The start date is flexible, but preference will be given to candidates who can begin by end of 2019. Some related publications from our group are: Initial appointment will be for one year and will be annually renewable thereafter for two more years subject to satisfactory research progress and continued availability of funds. Applicants from diverse backgrounds and nationalities are welcome. Minimum Education and Experience: Applicants must have (or be close to having) a PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, chemical biology, physics, chemical engineering, biology, bioengineering or related disciplines. Research experience in at least one of the following areas is preferred: biomolecular modeling and simulation, computational protein design, directed evolution, protein biophysics, and/or structural biology. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The most important requirement is a passion for biomolecular structure, modeling and design, the ability and desire to learn, develop, implement and test new ideas, and collaborate effectively with other researchers inside and outside Rutgers in an interdisciplinary team composed of members with diverse backgrounds and expertise. One or more of the following technical skills are strongly preferred: knowledge and experience in developing and using molecular modeling and simulation software, familiarity with the Rosetta software for protein modeling and design, an understanding of enzyme/protein structure-function relationships. Proficiency in a high-level programming language (e.g., C++, Python) is required. Proficiency in both written and oral communication skills in English is required for manuscripts/grants preparation, public presentation, and collaboration with other researchers. Experience with effectively mentoring junior researchers is preferred Equipment Utilized: The candidate will be provided with research opportunity to utilize and develop software for protein design and characterization. In addition, state-of-the-art equipment, such as cryo-EM, NMR, and mass spectrometry, is readily available by way of in-house core facilities of IQB in which Khare lab is located. IQB is also the world headquarter of the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics (RCSB) consortium and the Protein Data Bank (PDB), providing distinctively creative and vibrant interdisciplinary research environment together with neighboring institutes such as Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM), Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Waksman Institute.
