The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for part-time adjunct faculty and course developer positions for Translational Life Science Technology (TLST) classes beginning Fall 2019 at its branch campus at The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland.
The TLST program is a Bachelor of Science for graduates of community college or junior-level students from 4-year institutions interested in working in the biotechnology industry. The program educates students on translational science, which is the processes of turning scientific discoveries into life-saving solutions, by combining the theory of a traditional life science degree with hands-on, real-world examples of the work conducted in a biotechnology company.
The TLST classes will be held 1-2 times per week for a fifteen-week semester, likely in the mornings or evenings to accommodate the schedule of the students. Applicants for this position may apply to: 1) teach courses with existing content; 2) develop new course material; or 3) both develop and teach new courses for the following TLST classes:
BTEC 310:Instrumentation & Methods for the Biotechnology - This course will give a systematic, understandable, and practical introduction to basic biotechnology laboratory methods and the principles underlying the design and operation of common and sophisticated scientific instrumentation used in life science research laboratories.
BTEC 330: Software Applications in the Life Sciences - This course will provide an overview and basic practical skills in software tools that are used widely in biological research and development in the areas of general productivity, basic data analysis and databasing, statistical analysis and programming, analysis and comprehension of high-throughput genomic data, biological sequence analysis and bioinformatics, image analysis and morphometry.
BTEC 344: Epidemiology - This course will provide an intensive introduction to epidemiologic concepts and methods to train students in how to engage, collaborate, or interpret the results of epidemiologic research.
BTEC 350: Statistics for the Life Sciences - This course will provide an effective introduction to statistical methods used commonly by researchers who engage in, collaborate in, or interpret results of Translational Life Science Technology.
Applicants may also express interest in teaching and/or developing the curriculum for other TLST classes not listed here. A full list of classes can be found on the TLST website (shadygrove.umbc.edu/tlst) under course descriptions.
Applicants must have a graduate degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, public health, or a related professional field (Ph.D. or other terminal degree preferred). Experience in the biotechnology industry, government, or academia conducting research related to translational science is strongly preferred. Previous university teaching experience is helpful though not required.
