The position will play an important role in the design, development and maintenance of research-related, custom software used in a high-throughput, second-generation DNA sequencing Laboratory. This position requires the ability to dissect and analyze complex research problems using a multitude of programming languages that interact with our existing software architecture. Skills and knowledge needed for this position include: scripting and computer programming skills (Java, Perl, Python or Linux OS). The Northwest Genomics Center (NWGC) at the University of Washington is one of the leading genome centers in the United States. The NWGC, housed within UW Medicine's Department of Genome Sciences, is the largest self-sustaining genome center in the Pacific Northwest and one of the most successful genome centers in the country. It has partnered to deliver exome or whole genome sequence (WGS) data for many highly successful large-scale human genetic projects of both rare conditions and common diseases. These projects include the Centers for Mendelian Genomics (CMG), the NHLBI Exome Sequencing Project (ESP), and, most recently, the NHLBI Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine Program (TOPMed). Responsibilities:Bioinformatics: (100%)Design, develop, and maintain research-related custom software used in a high-throughput, second-generation DNA sequencing laboratory. Serve as a technical expert in the bioinformatics software developed, guiding other staff, researchers, and clients in its use. Dissect and analyze complex research problems using a multitude of programming languages that interact with our existing software architecture. Participate in developing, implementing and maintaining new workflows for NGS. Thrive in a fast-paced work environment that requires independent self-direction with an aptitude for team collaboration and open communication. Provide support in writing manuscripts, abstracts and presentations. Present analysis findings at group meetings and national conferences, if necessary. Other duties may be assigned. Minimum Requirements:BS in human genetics, bioinformatics, computer sciences or related field, or equivalent experience. A minimum 3 years of experience working with next-generation sequencing data and relevant tools for bioinformatics analysis, in either a professional or academic setting. Good understanding of human genetics. Strong knowledge of exploratory data analyses. Ability to utilize computational tools in common scripting languages (e.g. Linux, Perl, Python, and R). Experience working with high performance computing. Ability to manage projects and solve problems independently. Excellent collaborator with interdisciplinary teams. Strong written and oral communication skills. Desired Requirements:Masters or Ph.D., or foreign equivalent, in human genetics, bioinformatics, computer sciences, or related field Experience working with command line-based software for genetic analysis and next-generation sequencing protocols (e.g. BWA, GATK, SamTools, BCFtools and shell scripting). Genetics and DNA variation High-level computer programming language High performance cluster management Linux experience Analytical and troubleshooting skills for wet-bench laboratory protocols Knowledge of next-generation (Illumina) DNA sequencing chemistry Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIMS) design and implementation Working Conditions:The Bioinformatics Analyst position is expected to respond immediately to questions from investigators, teammates, and provide expert technical support for developing or trouble-shooting workflows. On occasion, it will be neceessary to respond immediately to urgent questions from the P.I. and other managers if problems arise that impact the work flow or deadlines for the NWGC production center - these tend to happen on a weekly basis and occasionally require extra hours be worked on a given day.
