Summary Description: Multiple postdoctoral positions in Precision Medicine in Columbia's Institute for Genomic Medicine. The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Columbia University Medical Center is a unique interdisciplinary research environment specializing in human genetics and genomics. The IGM uses next generation sequencing technologies to sequence 10K individuals per year, has cutting-edge programs developing cellular and animal models of human disease, and generates over 30 million dollars per year in research funding. Postdoctoral researchers are typically supervised by multiple faculty members, offering unique opportunities for integrating basic and translational research. The Institute is actively recruiting postdoctoral research scientists to be at the forefront of the rapidly expanding field of precision medicine and therapeutic discovery in the following areas:Bioinformatics/Statistical Genetics Working with an interdisciplinary team of investigators, the successful candidate will have primary responsibilities focused the development of novel approaches of analyzing next generation sequence data and rich phenotypic information from tens of thousands individuals to identify disease associated genomic loci and to study patterns of mutations genome-wide to discern pathogenic and benign mutations in individuals. A suitable candidate should have a doctoral degree in a quantitative field, such as bioinformatics, computational biology, statistical genetics, biostatistics or computer science, and have sufficient experience in algorithm development and scientific programming. The successful candidate will be supervised by Drs. David Goldstein, Kai Wang, Matt Harms, and/or or Erin Heinzen (or a combination thereof), and have significant interactions with other faculty and scientists within the Institute and within the broader Columbia and NYC research community.Human genetics/Precision MedicineWorking with an interdisciplinary team of investigators, the successful candidate will have primary responsibilities focused on the analysis and interpretation of genetic variation and detailed phenotypic information from patients with a range of disorders, including epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, schizophrenia, rare severe pediatric disorders and beyond, collected through the Columbia Precision Medicine Initiatives. A suitable candidate should have a doctoral degree in human genetics or a related field, and have extensive experience analyzing genomic datasets. The successful candidate will be supervised by Drs. David Goldstein, Kai Wang, Matt Harms, and/or Erin Heinzen (or a combination thereof), and have significant interactions with other faculty and scientists within the Institute and within the broader Columbia and NYC research community.Experimental genetics The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of investigators to study mouse and cellular models of neurological disease in order to reveal the pathogenic mechanisms of epilepsy and other neurological diseases. A suitable candidate should have a doctoral degree in functional biology, and specifically in in vivo and/or in vitro human disease models. The successful candidate will be co-supervised by Drs. David Goldstein, Wayne Frankel, Mike Boland, and/or Erin Heinzen (or a combination thereof), and have significant interactions with other faculty and scientists within the Institute and within the broader Columbia and NYC research community.
Minimum Qualifications: Education/experience required: Candidate must possess a doctoral degree (MD or PhD) or must be close enough to earning one to have it in hand by the appointment start date. Must have less than 5 years of postdoctoral experience.
